Black Back the Sixth (黑背老六), also known as Hei Bei the Sixth, was a member of the The Mystic Nine. Black Back the Sixth was a low-key person and was once a swordsman in Shaanxi.[1]
Name Origins[]
Black Back the Sixth got his nickname from the appearance of a black handprint on his back.[1] The handprint is thought to be from a grave robber is leaving a tomb, they suddenly feel that someone’s hand is on their shoulder, and it can’t be pulled off.[1]
Personality[]
Black Back the Sixth did things in the Northwestern China style and couldn't communicate well with others.[1] He was very unpopular in Changsha. He was a very taciturn person and his special character made him stand out. All kinds of people knew him and dared not provoke him. But it was also because of his character that people had no reason to hurt him, either.[1]
History[]
Hei Bei the Sixth was a swordsman in Shaanxi and belonged to a swordsmen group.[1] His boss died when he was in the northwest and the swordsmen group was disbanded.[1]
Hei Bei the Sixth later moved to Changsha and became a member of the Mystic Nine and robbed tombs.[1] He smoked opium and spent many nights in a brothel, providing for a prostitute. When she was forcibly sold, Black Back went six thousand miles alone before getting her back. He often entered a state of madness and had to practice swinging his sword every night until he was exhausted. During the day, he shrank aside on the street like a beggar.[1]
He never took protective measures when he was in the tomb, so his body and mind had deteriorated before he was fifty years old.[1] In his last years, he exchanged scraps for food and wine. At the age of seventy, he killed three people in a row and was later shot by the army. He was the only one in the Mystic Nine who had no family and had a miserable ending.[1]
